SECOND LIFE BUILT ENVIRONMEMT
RESEARCH PROJECT
The Second Life Built Environment Research Project began in late 2010.  Currently (2011) there are two goals: 1) the
recording of many of the structures/objects that exist in private ownership on the 'mainland' (Linden Lab owned territory).
A series of photo recording sweeps are being done, based mainly along the various public roadways on the various LL
continents.  All visible structures are photographed, cataloged by type and the data analyzed to see what (if any) patterns of
placement and usage show up.  Goal 2) theoretical analysis of the digital built environment--how is it culturally driven, how
does it function as a symbolic communication/memnonic device, how does the digital built environment reinforce or
contradict traditional theoretical assumptions in cultural geography about built structures and the cultural landscape as social
manifestations?

Given the lack of prior research by cultural geographers, this is very much a initial and exploratory adventure.  But SL is a
fascinating view of a digital world and digital reality, and deserves more attention from cultural geographers.

As I get further into the project, I will be posting images from the photo survey (you can also go to snapzilla to see literally
thousands of images of SL by residents) and the proposal and working documents as they develop.
